Your Therapy Journey: Step by Step

1

Get in Touch

Complete the contact form on my website or email me directly at jennypalmertherapy@outlook.com. Let me know a bit about what brings you to therapy and your preferred times for a consultation. I'll respond within 24 hours to schedule your free 20-minute consultation call.

What to include:

  • • Your name and preferred contact method
  • • A brief description of what's bringing you to therapy
  • • Your preferred times for sessions
  • • Any questions you'd like to discuss
2

Free Consultation Call (20 minutes)

We'll have a brief, relaxed conversation via phone or secure video. This is your opportunity to tell me more about your situation, ask questions about how I work, and get a feel for whether we're a good fit. There's no pressure—this is simply an exploration to see if working together makes sense for you.

What we'll discuss:

  • • What's bringing you to therapy
  • • Your goals and what you hope to achieve
  • • My therapeutic approach and credentials
  • • Session logistics, costs, and insurance
  • • Next steps if you'd like to proceed
3

First Full Session (60-90 minutes)

Your first full session is an initial assessment. We'll explore your background, current challenges, previous experiences with therapy, and what you'd like to achieve. This session helps me understand you fully so I can tailor my therapeutic approach to your specific needs. You'll also receive the secure video link for the session in advance.

What to expect:

  • • A comfortable, confidential space to share
  • • Questions about your history and current concerns
  • • Discussion of my therapeutic approach
  • • Agreement on therapeutic goals and next steps
  • • Time for your questions
4

Ongoing Therapy Work

We'll continue with regular sessions (usually weekly) to work collaboratively on your goals. Each session builds on the previous one. We'll explore patterns, learn new skills, and gradually move toward the changes you want to see. Throughout, we'll regularly check in on progress and adjust our approach as needed.

Typical ongoing sessions include:

  • • Review of the past week and check-in
  • • Focused therapeutic work on your goals
  • • Learning and practising new skills
  • • Reflection and planning for the week ahead
5

Progress & Transition

As you progress and feel more confident, we'll work together toward wrapping up therapy. This might mean transitioning to less frequent sessions (fortnightly or monthly) before eventually concluding. We'll consolidate everything you've learned and ensure you have the tools and resilience to move forward independently.

As therapy concludes, we'll:

  • • Review your progress and achievements
  • • Consolidate tools and strategies you've learned
  • • Build your confidence moving forward independently
  • • Discuss ongoing support or maintenance sessions if needed

How to Prepare for Your First Session

Technical Setup

Stable Internet Connection

Test your internet speed a day before. A wired connection is ideal, but WiFi works well if you have a strong signal.

Device

Use a computer, tablet, or smartphone with a camera and microphone. Desktop or laptop usually provide the best experience.

Headset (Optional)

A headset can improve audio quality and privacy, but your device's built-in speakers and microphone work fine.

Test the Link

I'll send you a secure link before your session. Test it 5-10 minutes early to ensure everything works.

Environment & Mindset

Private Space

Find a quiet, comfortable place where you won't be interrupted. Somewhere you feel safe to speak openly.

Minimal Distractions

Put your phone on silent, close other browser tabs, and let people around you know you need uninterrupted time.

Allow Time for Transition

Finish intense work or activities 15 minutes before your session so you can settle into a reflective mindset.

Journal Your Thoughts

Jot down any topics or concerns you'd like to discuss. This helps you get the most from your session.

What to Bring to Your Session

Essential

  • Openness: A willingness to share and explore what's on your mind.
  • Time: Give yourself the full session time without rushing.
  • Privacy: A quiet space where you can talk freely.
  • Curiosity: A willingness to explore and reflect on your thoughts and feelings.

Helpful to Have

  • Notebook: For jotting down notes or insights during/after the session.
  • List of Topics: Key things you want to discuss or explore.
  • Medical History (if relevant): Any relevant health information or medications.
  • Water: Stay hydrated—have a glass of water nearby.

Common Starting Questions

Should I tell my family/friends I'm going to therapy? +

That's entirely your choice. Some people find it helpful to tell trusted people they're getting support. Others prefer privacy. There's no "right" answer—do what feels comfortable for you.

What if I get emotional during therapy? +

It's completely normal and expected. Crying, feeling angry, or experiencing strong emotions is part of the healing process. I create a safe space for all emotions, and there's nothing to feel embarrassed about.

What if I'm not sure what to talk about? +

That's fine. I'll ask questions to help you explore what's on your mind. My role is to guide and support the conversation. Over time, you'll find it easier to know what to discuss.

How quickly will I see results? +

Everyone is different. Some people notice shifts within 1-2 sessions; others need more time. Most clients see meaningful progress within 4-6 sessions. What matters is consistent work and trust in the process. We'll regularly review your progress together.

Can I pause therapy and come back later? +

Yes. Life circumstances change, and that's okay. If you need to take a break, we can pause and resume when you're ready. We can also discuss this during our sessions.
